How to add a meta description that earns the click

Last updated:

AI Search Score checks for a meta description of a sensible length (roughly 70–165 characters). It’s the summary that appears under your title in search results.

Why this matters

The meta description is your pitch in the search results — the line that persuades someone to click you rather than the result above or below. It also gives engines a concise, human-written summary of the page. Too short and it’s wasted; too long and it’s truncated mid-sentence; missing entirely and the engine picks a random snippet for you.

How to fix it

Meta descriptions can’t be set from page body content — they live in the <head>, so you need your SEO plugin to add them. Any SEO plugin handles this (Slim SEO, Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO):

  • Edit the page, find the SEO plugin’s meta box, and write a description in the 70–165 character range.
  • Make it specific to the page and benefit-led — what the reader gets, not just what the page is.
  • Include the key term naturally; don’t stuff keywords.

If you don’t have an SEO plugin installed, that’s the first step — without one, there’s nowhere for the meta description to go.

How to check it worked

Re-scan. “Meta description present and well-sized” should turn green, showing the character count. View source and confirm a single <meta name="description"> with your text.
